Running Multiple EAs on One MT5 Account: Risk and Stats

Short answer: You can run several EAs on one MT5 account, but they all share one balance and one margin pool. Give each EA a unique magic number, track its stats separately, size for the case where their drawdowns coincide, and set a dollar limit per EA so one failure can't take the whole account.

Key takeaways

  • One account means one shared balance. A blow-up anywhere is a blow-up everywhere.
  • Unique magic numbers are the minimum. Without them you can't measure or limit each EA.
  • Size for drawdowns that add up, not average out.
  • Correlated EAs (same pair, same style) behave like one bigger EA.

Why one account is a shared risk

Every open position draws on the same free margin. If one grid EA floats a big loss, margin level falls for all of them. At the broker's stop-out level, positions get closed, often the largest losers first and regardless of which EA opened them. Your best EA can be closed out by your worst.

Step 1: one magic number per EA

  • Set a unique magic number in each EA's inputs. Never run two copies of the same EA with the same number on the same symbol.
  • Keep a simple register: EA, version, symbol, magic number, lot, date started.
  • Without this, the account history is one blended equity curve and you can't tell which EA is earning and which is bleeding.

Step 2: track stats per EA

For each magic number you want net profit, max drawdown, profit factor, win rate, expectancy and current open exposure. VRD Insight is a free, read-only MT5 tracker that groups trades by magic number and shows each EA's equity and drawdown curves (drawdown calculated from closed trades) and its open exposure by currency.

Step 3: size for combined drawdown

Illustrative example (not a recommendation):

EA Worst historical drawdown at your lot
EA A $1,000
EA B $800
EA C $1,200
Worst case if they coincide $3,000

On a $5,000 account that is 60%, before applying any safety margin. Our capital guide suggests planning for 1.5× the historical worst, which makes it $4,500 here. Diversification can reduce that in practice, but don't assume it will.

Step 4: watch correlation

  • Two EAs on GBPUSD, or two that both buy USD weakness, are really one position.
  • Several grid or recovery EAs together are the worst mix, because they all load up in the same trending move. See why grid and martingale equity curves fail.
  • Check exposure by currency, not just by symbol.

Step 5: give each EA a hard limit

Decide in advance: "If EA B loses $800, it stops." Write that down per EA and enforce it. - VRD Guardian ($79) is an equity protector and drawdown limiter with user-set news and risky-day windows. Guardian makes a best-effort attempt to limit losses and protect an account in difficulty using predefined rules. It cannot guarantee that losses will be avoided or that an account can be rescued. Gaps, slippage, broker or connectivity failures can prevent rules executing. Trading carries a high risk of loss. - VRD Quant ($69) turns a backtest (at your real lot for recovery EAs) into a suggested lot, operating capital and abandonment level for each EA. - VRD Complete ($149) adds per-EA Passports and a central reserve on top of all the modules, built for exactly this: stopping one EA from bringing the whole house down.

Checklist

  1. Each EA has its own magic number.
  2. You know each EA's worst drawdown in dollars, at your lot size.
  3. The account can survive the sum of those drawdowns × 1.5.
  4. No two EAs are the same bet in disguise.
  5. Each EA has a written, enforced stop line.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run multiple EAs on one MT5 account?

Yes. MT5 runs one EA per chart, and each EA should use its own magic number so its trades can be told apart. The risk is that every EA draws on the same balance and margin, so one bad EA can stop out all of them.

What is a magic number in MT5?

It is an ID an EA stamps on its orders. Unique magic numbers let you, and tools like VRD Insight, split profit, drawdown and exposure per EA instead of only seeing the account total.

How do I see stats per EA in MT5?

MT5's own report shows the account as a whole. You need to group trades by magic number, by exporting history or using a per-EA tracker such as the free VRD Insight.

Is combined drawdown just the average of each EA's drawdown?

No. In the worst case the drawdowns line up and add up. Three EAs that each lose $1,000 at their worst can lose $3,000 together, especially if they trade the same pair or style.

Should I use one account per EA instead?

Separate accounts give the cleanest isolation but tie up more capital. On a shared account, give each EA a hard dollar loss limit and track its drawdown separately.

One EA blowup costs more than the whole suite.

VRD Complete contains single-EA blowups and frees capital you have parked as idle buffers. $149 at launch pricing.
